DESCRIPTION:
As part of a partnership between USC and the Consulate General of Mexico in Los Angeles, we are thrilled to announce Cátedra México, a new annual residency in which a distinguished artist from Mexico will spend a week at USC, sharing work and interacting with students and the broader community.

The inaugural Cátedra México will feature Graciela Iturbide, a world-renowned photographer who has had solo exhibitions at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Getty Museum, among others. Iturbide's powerful images explore indigenous and border cultures, identity, sexuality, rituals, and the visual aspects of cultures in constant transition. Following remarks by USC President C. L. Max Nikias and Consul General Carlos García de Alba, Visions and Voices will present an evening with this important image maker, whose photographs “write a personal fable of a country that seems to be continually in process . . . where people who are not resigned to the way things are opt for transformation instead” (New York Times). Iturbide's presentation will be followed by a conversation with acclaimed artist and author Enrique Martínez Celaya, the Provost Professor of Humanities and Arts at USC.

Graciela Iturbide was born in 1942 in Mexico City. She has been honored around the world, with a Guggenheim fellowship, the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie Award, the Hasselblad Award, and the National Prize of Sciences and Arts in Mexico City.

Enrique Martínez Celaya's work has been exhibited and collected by major institutions around the world, and he is the author of books and papers in art, poetry, philosophy, and physics. He is the first person to hold the position of Provost Professor of Humanities and Arts at USC.
