Check-in will begin at 11:30 a.m. on campus. The tour will depart at 12 p.m. and conclude at the Mercado La Paloma at 3 p.m. Lunch will be provided at the Mercado.  

DESCRIPTION: 
USC students will investigate the impact of redlining on the neighborhoods surrounding Exposition Park and South Los Angeles in this interactive experience and guided walking tour. 

Beginning in USC Special Collections, participants will examine historical maps, government records, photographs, and community documents that reveal how housing policies and planning decisions contributed to inequality. 

The experience continues beyond the archive with a walking tour through areas historically graded by the Home Owners’ Loan Corporation, the former federal agency infamous for initiating redlining. Using a shared digital Learning Atlas, participants will compare historical records with present-day realities, document their observations, and reflect on the relationship between policy, place, and lived experience.

This walking tour is a part of From the Map to the Streets: Redlining & Resistance in L.A., a three-part series that looks at how the history of Los Angeles is written into its neighborhoods. Through conversations, hands-on activities, archival exploration, and guided walking tours, uncover how redlining shaped the city and continues to influence housing, infrastructure, and environmental justice today.
