DESCRIPTION:
There are few more qualified to explain the power of social media and its impact on museums than Kimberly Drew. Sharing her experiences as the social media manager at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and as a freelance curator and art influencer, Drew will recount her unique career path and efforts to grow her audience and impact beyond museum walls.
A student-moderated Q&A will follow, touching on Drew’s personal journey in the art world, her work in fashion and the Internet, the digital power wielded by museum attendees and community members, and more. This special presentation is sure to inspire not only young art-minded professionals but anyone looking to dismantle power structures in the pursuit of diversity and equity.
Bio:
Kimberly Drew is a writer, curator, and activist who received her BA in art history and African American studies from Smith College. She first experienced the art world as an intern in the director’s office of The Studio Museum in Harlem, which inspired her to start the Tumblr blog Black Contemporary Art and sparked her career in social media and the arts. Since then, Drew’s writing has appeared in Vogue, Glamour, W, Teen Vogue, and Lenny Letter, and she has executed Instagram takeovers for Prada, The White House, and Instagram. Drew recently left her role as the social media manager at The Met, and a book that she is co-authoring with Jenna Wortham, Black Futures, will be released in February 2020. (Instagram, Twitter)
