DESCRIPTION:
If food can connect our past to our present, how can we use it to foresee our future? In a virtual potluck that is part cooking class, part world-building workshop, activists Charlene Carruthers and Tia Oso and artist Ashley Jane Lewis will unlock new futures through food inspired by the Black diaspora. In the tradition of Sankofa, they will look back to help us move forward, and rediscover foodways to heal our past and help us dream of healthier futures.

BYOF (Bring Your Own Future): A Virtual Potluck is part of Portal: A Healing and Dreaming Experience of Afrofutures. Over three afternoons of multisensory exploration, storytelling, and discussion, Annenberg Lab fellows, students, alumni, and guests will explore ways to embody new futures together virtually.
 
Bios: 
Charlene A. Carruthers is a Black, queer, feminist community organizer and writer with over 15 years of experience in racial justice, feminist, and youth leadership development movement work. As the founding national director of BYP100 (Black Youth Project 100), she has worked alongside hundreds of young Black activists to build a national base of activist member-led organization of Black 18-35 year olds dedicated to creating justice and freedom for all Black people.

Ashley Jane Lewis is an interactive artist, maker, and youth tech educator. In 2016, she was listed in the Top 100 Black Women to Watch by the Canada International Black Women Event. She is currently studying to get her Masters in Interactive Telecommunications in New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.

Tia Oso is a transformational organizer, strategist, and community engagement professional specializing in social change initiatives at the intersection of social justice, art, popular culture, media, and communications. Oso has organized for over 10 years, leading campaigns to mobilize thousands of advocates for various issues in the public interest.
