DESCRIPTION:
How do you make friends and create community in an online game? When the only ways to connect with people is digitally, how do you detect toxicity? Glow Up Games founders Mitu Khandaker and Latoya Peterson and game designer Lindsay Grace will discuss using technology to fill emotional needs and what video games can teach us about love.

Digital Intimacy and Designing Affection is part of Portal: A Healing and Dreaming Experience of Afrofutures. Over three afternoons of multisensory exploration, storytelling, and discussion, Annenberg Lab fellows, students, alumni, and guests will explore ways to embody new futures together virtually.
 
Bios:
Lindsay Grace is Knight Chair in Interactive Media and an associate professor at the University of Miami School of Communication. He is vice president of the Higher Education Video Game Alliance and the 2019 recipient of the Games for Change Vanguard award. His book, Doing Things with Games: Social Impact through Design, is a well-received guide to game design. In 2020, he edited and authored Love and Electronic Affection: A Design Primer.

Mitu Khandaker is CEO and co-founder of Glow Up Games. She is also Assistant Arts Professor at the NYU Game Center, where she teaches game design and development. She holds a PhD on designing games for immersive interfaces such as VR, and has a background in computer engineering.

Latoya Peterson is CXO and Director of Culture at Glow Up Games. A television veteran specializing in emerging technology, Peterson was an award-winning race and culture writer for major outlets like the New York Times, NPR, Jezebel, and Kotaku, as well as a three-time judge for the World Video Game Hall of Fame.
