—Time Out
Modern technology and old-world values collide in East West Players’ production of Free Outgoing, the internationally acclaimed play about a middle-class home in Chennai torn apart by an indiscreet cell-phone video. When a well-behaved Indian girl is filmed with a boy in her classroom, the video clip goes viral. Transmitted from person to person, it infects first the local community and then what feels like the entire country with a burning moral outrage. The play premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in London in 2007 to sold-out shows and rave reviews.
Writer Anupama Chandrasekhar is a Chennai-based journalist-turned-playwright and the first Indian to be nominated for the London Evening Standard’s Charles Wintour Prize for Most Promising Playwright, the Whiting Award, and the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. Her play Disconnect, set in a call center in Chennai, has been translated into multiple languages and staged all over the world.
