Don’t miss Antigona, Martín Santangelo’s stunning flamenco interpretation of Sophocles’ Antigone, performed by Noche Flamenca and starring flamenco superstar Soledad Barrio as a disenfranchised woman struggling against patriarchal authority. At its heart, the story of Antigone resonates with the roots of flamenco, which is based not in any one culture or religion, but on the strength of family. Antigone’s story is her humanity and her quest to bury her brother regardless of the circumstances.

Artist Bios:

Noche Flamenca is the most authentic flamenco company touring today. Formed in 1993 by Martín Santangelo and his Bessie Award–winning wife, Soledad Barrio, the company is celebrated around the world for its spellbinding, deeply emotional performances. (Twitter)

Soledad Barrio (choreographer and dancer) has won awards in more than 15 nations, including a Bessie Award for Outstanding Creative Achievement and a 2015 Dance magazine Exceptional Artist award. She has appeared as a soloist with Manuela Vargas, Blanca del Rey, Luisillo, El Guito, Manolete, Cristóbal Reyes, El Toleo, Paco Romero’s Ballet Español, Festival Flamenco, and many others. She has performed with artists including Alejandro Granados, El Torombo, Isabel Bayón, Jesus Torres, Miguel Perez, Belén Maya, Manolo Marin, Javier Barón, Merche Esmeralda, and Rafael Campallo.

Martín Santangelo, the artistic director of Noche Flamenca, studied with Ciro, Paco Romero, El Guito, Manolete, and Alejandro Granados. He has performed with Maria Benitez’s Teatro Flamenco and Paco Romero’s Ballet Español. He appeared in Julie Taymor’s Juan Darien at Lincoln Center and choreographed and performed in Eduardo Machado’s Deep Song, directed by Lynne Taylor-Corbett.
