DESCRIPTION:
Rebeca Lane is one of the fiercest voices of Latin American hip hop. In an invigorating evening of music and conversation, she will be interviewed by acclaimed musician Maya Jupiter and perform with DJ Francesca Harding.

Activist, poet, rapper, sociologist, and hip hop educator Rebeca Lane was born in Guatemala City in 1984 and grew up during the final stages and difficult aftermath of her country’s lengthy civil war. She became an activist early, ultimately finding her voice as a poet and rapper. Today, Lane performs around the world—and she agitates for justice wherever she goes. Set to reggae, dancehall, cumbia, hip hop, and R&B rhythms, Lane’s lyrics powerfully address feminism, poverty, violence against women, imposed heterosexuality, and much more. Lane is also the founder of Somos Guerreras, a movement to create a less sexist hip hop culture, and is part of the collective Somos Mujeres, Somos Hip Hop with 12 other Latin American rappers and activists. Before starting her solo career, Lane was a member of the hip hop posse Última Dosis.

Lane will perform with DJ Francesca Harding, who has spun internationally and is one of the most sought-after DJs in Los Angeles and beyond. The evening will also include a conversation with musician Maya Jupiter, co-founder of Artivist Entertainment. Jupiter has released two solo albums, the latest created with Quetzal Flores and Martha Gonzalez of the Grammy Award-winning band Quetzal and her husband, singer/songwriter Aloe Blacc.
