DESCRIPTION:
Founded by director Soon-ho Park in 2011, the Bereishit Dance Company is known for its amazing sense of space and rhythms, kinesthetic clarity and power, and approach to Korean traditional culture from a contemporary view. Making their Los Angeles debut, the acclaimed Seoul-based company will perform two pieces.

In Balance & Imbalance, dancers seamlessly partner and hurtle through space to illustrate the constantly turning wheel of opposition and harmony at the heart of all relationships. Featuring five dancers, the piece is accompanied by an ensemble of Korean traditional drummers.

Through the medium of dance and its harmonious play between rhythm, movement, and space, Judo explores the idea of sports as a way to control, mediate, traverse, and transcend humanity’s violent, churning urges.

The performances will be followed by a conversation with Park and other artists.

Bios:

Soon-ho Park, the director and founder of Bereishit Dance Company, has received major funding from Arts Council Korea, and awards including Choreography Award of the Year by the Performing Arts and Film Review, the New Choreographer’s Award by the International Modern Dance Festival, and Best Choreography Award from both the Korean Dance Researchers and Critics Association and the ChangMu Arts Center. In 2007, his work opened the Festival Asia in Barcelona, Spain. Since then, his works have been presented at venues and festivals in countries such as Poland, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Uruguay, India, Switzerland, and Mexico, and he has collaborated with installation and media artists, and musicians internationally, including a collaboration with Giga Hizume, director of the multimedia and live performance group Sal Vanilla in Japan.

Founded by Soon-ho Park in 2011, Bereishit is a Seoul-based dance company that approaches Korean traditional culture from a contemporary view. Keeping the fundamental value of Korean culture, as opposed to simply borrowing or transforming it, the company’s work explores issues of identity and transformation while also delving into multimedia, street dance, community dance work, and real-time interactive demonstration. Bereishit has performed at the Arts Center of NYU Abu Dhabi, the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Pittsburgh Dance Council, ArtPower at UC San Diego, Dance Salad Festival, Strathmore, Celebrity Series of Boston, NYU Skirball, The Ringling, and FUNDarte.

Presented by USC Visions and Voices. Co-sponsored by the USC Kaufman School of Dance and Asian Pacific American Student Services.
