DESCRIPTION:
In an extraordinary union, legendary drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, vocal supergroup säje (rhymes with “beige”), and award-winning pianist and USC Thornton professor Patrice Rushen will join artistic forces to perform original compositions, contemporary covers, and jazz standards while challenging barriers in the jazz industry and advocating for change in society. Following the concert, they will discuss their experiences and efforts as women and BIPOC artists in jazz with USC professor Sean Holt. Bassist Anna Butterss and students from the USC Thornton School of Music will also perform.

Preceding the concert, the musicians will take part in an open rehearsal and conversation for USC students, faculty, and staff. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to experience their artistic process in an intimate and casual setting!

Bios:
Anna Butterss is an upright and electric bassist. She frequently performs with Jeff Parker, Jenny Lewis, and Madison Cunningham, and has also performed and recorded with artists as diverse as Phoebe Bridgers, Bright Eyes, Makaya McCraven, Walter Smith III, Chris Speed, and Larry Goldings. Anna lives in Los Angeles.

Terri Lyne Carrington is a three-time GRAMMY® Award–winning musician, producer, educator, and activist. She has performed on over 100 recordings and has worked with artists such as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Stan Getz, Cassandra Wilson, Dianne Reeves, and Esperanza Spalding. In 2019, Carrington was granted the Doris Duke Artist Award for her contributions to jazz. Her latest work, Waiting Game (with Social Science), was nominated for a 2021 GRAMMY® for best jazz instrumental album.

Sean Holt is a musician, producer, songwriter, and Vice Dean of Contemporary Music at the USC Thornton School of Music. Holt is also a collaborator with a wide range of artists including Carlos Santana, Flo Rida, Slash, John Legend, Big and Rich, Bette Midler, Bruno Mars, Kenny Loggins, Mary J. Blige, Gloria Estefan, Arturo Sandoval, Michael Buble’, Will.i.am, Sergio Mendes, and Sheila E., and co-founder of the Believe Foundation.

Patrice Rushen is an award-winning musician, composer, and Chair of Popular Music at the USC Thornton School of Music. Considered one of the world’s top jazz pianists, she has collaborated with artists such as Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Prince, Nancy Wilson, Sheena Easton, Carlos Santana, and Freddie Hubbard. Rushen also spends time with organizations dedicated to establishing music education and mentorship programs for underserved youth.

säje is a GRAMMY®-nominated vocal supergroup featuring Sara Gazarek, Amanda Taylor, Johnaye Kendrick, and Erin Bentlage. Born out of close friendship and incredibly deep admiration, the renowned artists, composers, and arrangers have come together to explore, create, and celebrate music rooted in joy, curiosity, lush harmony, heartfelt expression, and profound sisterhood.
