DESCRIPTION:
Common Ground is an original series of events that showcases Los Angeles artists and organizers who are deconstructing and reimagining America’s relationship to itself—the interplay between the nation and the actual landmass on which it depends.

Featuring intersecting themes of water, land, and sanctuary, each Common Ground event has been specifically created by community partners who address immigration, environmental justice, displacement, and collective ownership. Through collective art making, performances, and conversations with USC scholars, Common Ground will tap into the elemental roots of justice movements to provide inspiration, activation, and connection.

Water—An Activist Dance Theater Project by CONTRA-TIEMPO
Monday, April 12, at 6 p.m.
The premiere of somos agua: a collective honoring of our mama agua, a dance film by CONTRA-TIEMPO in collaboration with their community, will be followed by a discussion exploring the intersection of water, art making, and equitable urban planning with CONTRA-TIEMPO’s founding artistic director Ana Maria Alvarez, USC School of Architecture professor Esther Margulies, and LitLabs director Jacqueline Barrios.

Land—Featuring Quetzal Flores and Martha Gonzalez
Tuesday, April 20, at 6 p.m.
Join GRAMMY-winning musicians Quetzal Flores and Martha Gonzalez of the acclaimed East L.A. rock group Quetzal, visual artist and USC graduate student Yesenia Hunter, and East L.A. poet Aeden Hunter for dynamic workshops on creating art, building community, and exploring our relationships to land and place. Open to all skill levels, attendees can participate at their own comfort level, and no materials are required.

Sanctuary—Featuring San Cha, Bay Davis, and the Creators of Gentefied
Thursday, April 29, at 7 p.m.
An inspiring evening of performances and conversation curated by Solidarity for Sanctuary will include musicians San Cha and Doris Muñoz, non-binary trans femme poet Bay Davis, curators AJ Girard and Melahn Frierson, and the creators of Netflix’s Gentefied, Linda Yvette Chávez and Marvin Lemus, and showrunner's assistant Stephanie Osuna-Hernandez, along with USC Thornton School of Music instructor Jazmín Morales.
