Artists on Artists: Xandra Ibarra in Conversation with Miguel Gutierrez and Jesse Harrod
ADMISSION:
Admission is free. RSVP beginning Thursday, February 25, at 9 a.m.
DESCRIPTION:
The day after her performance of i bear down; my body pulls, Xandra Ibarra will explore her process in conversation with choreographer Miguel Gutierrez and fiber artist Jesse Harrod. Ibarra will expand on her archival residency at the ONE Archives; offer insight into the performance art of Bob Flanagan and Sheree Rose; and discuss pleasure, embodiment, queer and racialized art practices, and her method of activating and transforming historical objects into performance installations.
Bios:
Xandra Ibarra, who sometimes works under the alias of La Chica Boom, is an Oakland-based performance artist and community organizer from the U.S./Mexico border region of El Paso/Juárez. Ibarra works across performance, video, and sculpture to address abjection and joy and the borders between proper and improper racial, gender, and queer subjectivities. Her art has been featured at El Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (Bogotá), The Broad (Los Angeles), ExTeresa Arte Actual (Mexico City), the Leslie-Lohman Museum (New York City), and the Anderson Collection (Stanford). Ibarra’s work is located within feminist, immigrant, anti-rape, and prison abolitionist movements.
Miguel Gutierrez is a choreographer, composer, performer, singer, writer, educator, and advocate who has lived in New York for over twenty years. He is fascinated by the time-based nature of performance and how it creates an ideal frame for phenomenological questions around presence and meaning-making. His work proposes an immersive state for performer and audience alike, where attention itself becomes an elastic material. He believes in an approach to art-making that is fierce, fragile, empathetic, political, and irreverent. In recent years, he has been occupied with thinking about how he negotiates his queer Latinx identity within the traditions of the white avant-garde.
Jesse Harrod is a fiber artist whose practice explores embodiment, gender, and sexual identity. Working with multiple media forms and materials, Harrod builds on herstories of 1970s feminist art to offer queer imaginations of the body, from the abject and the grotesque to the humorous. Harrod has an MFA from the Department of Fiber & Material Studies at the Art Institute of Chicago and a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University. She is currently the head of the Fibers & Material Studies Program at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia.
