DESCRIPTION:
Hailed by NPR as “one of the groups that has really helped to shape the future of classical music,” yMusic is an ensemble of six innovative New York City instrumentalists who are equally at home performing with popular musicians like Björk and commissioning scores from rising orchestral composers. In two very special performances, yMusic, award-winning composer and USC Thornton professor Andrew Norman, dancer/choreographer and USC Kaufman professor Jennifer McQuiston Lott, and avant-pop music-video director Nathan Johnson will create a hybrid “chamber music video.” Share in their creative journey at this unique event, which will also feature new works by students from the USC Thornton School of Music and USC Kaufman School of Dance.

About the Artists:

Nathan Johnson
is a multidisciplinary artist best known for his work as a film composer and director. When he is not creating music or videos, he works as an art director with The Made Shop, a boutique design firm. (Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter, Vimeo, Wikipedia)

Jennifer McQuiston Lott joined the faculty of the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance in 2016. She has danced with Gibney Dance Company, GroundWorks DanceTheater, and many other groups, and her choreography and dance films have appeared at venues including Baryshnikov Arts Center and National Sawdust. The New Yorker says Andrew Norman is “among the most talented and original of young American composers . . . master of a uniquely dazzling and mercurial style.” He is a member of the faculty of the USC Thornton School of Music and director of the LA Phil’s fellowship program for high-school composers. yMusic is Hideaki Aomori (sax, clarinet, flute), Gabriel Cabezas (cello), C.J. Camerieri (trumpet, French horn, and keyboard), Rob Moose (violin/guitar), Alex Sopp (flute), and Nadia Sirota (viola). They have collaborated with Ben Folds, Dirty Projectors, and Paul Simon and inspired an expanding repertoire of original works by some of today’s foremost composers, including Nico Muhly and Andrew Norman.
